Two arrests have been made by the Arkansas City Police Department in two completely unrelated cases.

In one arrest, the Arkansas City PD arrested an Arkansas City man Tuesday night on burglary and theft charges from two local businesses.

Alexander Michael Sanchez, 25, was arrested on suspicion of one felony count each of burglary and theft, two counts of misdemeanor theft, and one misdemeanor count each of criminal damage to property and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Sanchez was booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $9,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. He remained in custody at the time of this release.

Officers were dispatched at 8:59 p.m. Jan. 5 to Terry’s Place, located at 121 S. Summit St. in downtown Arkansas City, for a report of theft.

They learned a male suspect had entered the business, allegedly stolen money from the tip jar and then left. It was determined that the suspect had left a bicycle and that type of bicycle was sold at Spoke-N-Things, located at 208 N. Summit St.

Employees at Terry’s provided police with a physical description of the suspect and a possible first name. Officers identified a suspect and proceeded to an address in the 900 block of South Summit Street, where they made contact with Sanchez.

Further investigation determined he had allegedly committed a burglary and theft at Spoke-N-Things, caused damage to a vehicle and stolen a bicycle at Cowley College, and taken money from Terry’s Place.

At the time of his arrest, Sanchez initially resisted arrest, but eventually was taken safely into custody without further incident.

Ark City woman arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault

In a separate incident, the Arkansas City Police Department arrested an Arkansas City woman Monday after she allegedly displayed a firearm to a neighbor during a dispute.

Sonya Lee Tomey, 45, was arrested on suspicion of one count of felony aggravated assault.

Tomey was booked into the Cowley County Jail in Winfield in lieu of $20,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. She since has posted bond and been released.

Officers were dispatched at 2:51 p.m. Monday to MeadowWalk Apartments, located at 925 W. Skyline Road, for a report that the caller had been threatened with a gun.

When they arrived, police contacted the 27-year-old victim, who reported that a resident of the complex had knocked on her door and showed a firearm because of a neighbor dispute.

Officers contacted the suspect, identified as Tomey, and recovered the firearm during this contact.
