Student drops lawsuit on eagle feather

MOORE, Okla. (AP) – An American Indian student has dropped her lawsuit against the Moore school district after being denied permission to wear an eagle feather on her graduation cap.

The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/1EZM0HE ) reports Susan Alexander, on behalf of her daughter, dropped the suit. The explanation given in court records was that "intervening events" had made the issue irrelevant. Alexander’s daughter is a senior at Southmoore High School.

A federal district judge is expected to rule on a similar case on whether Caney Valley High School senior Hayden Griffith can wear a feather on her cap. The judge likely will decide before Griffith’s graduation ceremony Thursday night.

Possession of eagle feathers is illegal. An exception is made for federally recognized tribe members, who can obtain a permit to possess one.
