Muscogee (Creek) recall petition fails

OKMULGEE, Okla. (AP) – A petition to remove the embattled principal chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation has failed.

Organizers calling for the impeachment of George Tiger say they fell a few signatures short of the amount needed by Monday evening. They needed 3,290 for an impeachment proceeding to be considered.

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council in March voted in favor of a no-confidence resolution regarding Tiger. Earlier that month, the Tulsa World newspaper reported Tiger signed a secret contract in 2009 with a developer of a Broken Arrow casino project, which would have competed with the Creek Nation’s Tulsa casino.

Tiger says he will run for re-election this year. Tiger says he did nothing wrong because he signed the contract before he became chief.
