Ceremony to honor state’s first African-American senator

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – A ceremony is scheduled on the floor of the Oklahoma Senate to honor the state’s first African-American state senator.

Wednesday’s ceremony will mark the 50th anniversary of the election of former state Sen. Melvin Porter to the Senate District 48 seat in northeastern Oklahoma City. Porter and his family are scheduled to attend and a Senate resolution is expected to be read.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place Wednesday afternoon after the Senate convenes at 1:30 p.m.
