Officials confirm five people were injured and taken to the hospital after a smudge pot exploded in Okmulgee County near Beggs on Friday night.

Okmulgee County Emergency Management said it happened around 10:30 p.m. and those five people suffered second and third-degree burns.

Emergency management said four were med flighted and one was taken by ambulance to the Hillcrest Burn Center.

At this time, there are no updates on the victims’ conditions.

Emergency Management said responders from Beggs and Creek County were at the scene.

A smudge pot is used on crops where the base is filled with oil and the stack produces fog that keeps crops, or in this case people, around it warm.

Emergency Management says everyone should always use caution with any heating device, indoor or outdoor, especially heading into the winter months.
