School Bus Driver Requirements Waived Due To Driver Shortage, Begins Monday

On Friday, the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety decided that the state will participate in the waiver and change the CDL exam.

This means the portion of the exam that requires applicants to identify “under the hood” engine components will be waived in an effort to ease the bus driver staffing shortage in Oklahoma. “Under the hood” means people have to inspect under the hood, they have to talk about brakes, shocks, suspension, and fluid levels.

Beginning on Monday, the state is waiving these requirements for anyone who wants to become a school bus driver.

The change is designed to help alleviate a shortage of drivers in some school districts.

In order to drive a bus, you must still get a CDL license.
