UPDATED: Two Dead After Accident on I-35 Tuesday Morning in Kay County Near Tonkawa

A double fatality collision occurred on Tuesday morning at at approximately 4:35 am on Interstate 35 in the northbound lane, approximately ½ mile south of mile marker 214, one mile south of Tonkawa in Kay County resulting in north bound traffic on I-35 being detoured through Tonkawa.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol report, a 2016 Nissan Sentra driven by Xavier M. Mitchell, 22, of Salina, Kansas, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Medical Examiner with head, arm, leg, internal and external trunk injuries.

The passenger in the Nissan, Kyra D. Ray, age 21 of Salina, Kansas was pinned for approximately 4 ½ hours before being freed by the Tonkawa Fire Department utilizing the Hurst tool and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Medical Examiner with head, arm, leg, internal and external trunk injuries.

The police report said the driver of the Nissan was traveling northbound on I-35 and for an unknown reason departed the roadway to the right and impacted the barrier wall, and then struck a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Dao Marical, 57, of Oklahoma City, a 2006 Ford Econoline, driven by Gloria A. Gray, 35 of Spencer, and a 2018 Kenworth Tractor Trailer, driven by Jeffrey W. Payne, 55 of Oklahoma City. None of the other drivers were injured and a passenger in the Ford Ecoline, Tristian Anderson, 34 of Edmond was also not injured.

The accident was investigated by Trooper Langston of the Kay County detachment of Troop K. and assisted by Trooper Terrell of the Kay/Noble county detachment of Troop K, as well as Trooper Bassett of Troop S, LT Ledbette  and Trooper Regnier of the Traffic Homicide Unit, the Kay County Sheriff’s Office, Tonkawa Police Department, 8th District Drug Task Force and Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
