West Middle School Begins Summer School

 

Summer school began this week for West Middle School students. This month-long program offers remediation in language arts and mathematics.

Principal Stacey Sattre said there’s currently 18 sixth graders, 26 seventh graders and a few other students from East Middle School.

“Each day students will begin with either two hours in ELA or two hours in math and then switch,” said Sattre. Summer school runs from 8 to 10 a.m. for the first subject and 10 a.m. to noon for the second.

West currently has four teachers for seventh grade and two sixth grade teachers, plus an additional teacher for the eighth grade students. Sixth grade teachers include Mrs. Westermier, ELA, and Ms. Nichols, math. Seventh grade teachers include Ms. Martinez and Ms. Laughlin, math, and Mrs. Locke and Mr. Zornes, ELA. Ms. Schatz is the reading teacher for the eighth grade.

All summer school teachers at WMS are certified in the areas they are teaching.

Summer school at WMS is on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The doors open at 7:45 a.m. Once students are inside the classroom they are taken to the cafeteria to get breakfast and then go back and eat in their classrooms. A free sack lunch is handed out to all students at noon as part of the Summer Food Service Program offered through the school district.

“Our attendance has been great so far,” said Sattre. “So many students have already told me they’re loving it.”

Sattre said WMS hasn’t had summer school for a number of years. “I’m very happy the district decided to open up summer school this year to more students. I have to commend the teachers here. They simply wanted to teach to help get the children remediated.”
