(OKLAHOMA CITY) – Sept. 1, 2026 – This September, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is joining Feeding America and food banks nationwide for Hunger Action Month, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about hunger and inspiring action to end it.
According to the latest data available from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study, Oklahoma has the second highest food insecurity rate in the nation at 20.2% in 2024, only behind Arkansas at 20.7%. Oklahoma has the highest child food insecurity rate in the nation at 27.3%, with more than 263,000 children facing food insecurity statewide.
This data confirms that hunger exists in every county in Oklahoma and is affecting more Oklahoma families than in recent years.
This Hunger Action Month, the Regional Food Bank is asking Oklahomans to come together and play their part to fight hunger together, whether by volunteering, advocating, donating or wearing orange to raise awareness.
“As the cost of essentials like groceries and energy continue to put pressure on household budgets, everyone can take action this September to help ensure their neighbors have access to the food they need to thrive,” said Stacy Dykstra, chief executive officer at the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “Whether you give, volunteer, speak up or support your community in another way, your actions matter.”

Sept. 1: Hunger Action Month kicks off statewide! The Skydance Bridge and Devon Tower will be lit orange to shine a light on the issue.

Sept. 15: National Voter Registration Day. Encourage your friends and neighbors to register to vote.

Sept. 29: Hunger Action Day. The Regional Food Bank encourages everyone to wear orange, the color of hunger relief, to promote hunger awareness in Oklahoma.
The Regional Food Bank’s Food for Kids Match campaign continues through Sept. 30. Donations to the Regional Food Bank’s Food for Kids Programs are matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $285,000, thanks to the Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma, Mark and Beth Brewer, Expand Energy, Dolese Brothers Corporation and David and Lezlie Hudiburg.
