As letter carriers prepare to walk their routes, they are also taking on an important role in the
fight against hunger across North Central Oklahoma.
On Saturday, May 9, communities nationwide will take part in the annual Stamp Out Hunger
Food Drive, organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers. The event is the largest
single-day food drive in the country, turning neighborhood mailboxes into collection points for
non-perishable food donations.
People are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag, paper or plastic, containing non-perishable foods
such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, peanut butter, rice or
cereal next to their mailbox before the regular mail delivery that Saturday. Letter carriers will
collect these food donations as they deliver mail along their routes and ensure they are
distributed to local food agencies.
In North Central Oklahoma, the United Way of North Central Oklahoma works closely with
volunteers and community partners to make sure donations reach local pantries and families in
need.
Local agencies participating in the effort include the New Emergency Resource Agency,
Peachtree Landing, Survivor Resource Network, Friendship Feast, First Lutheran Church, The
Blessing Boxes, and The Mission.
The need for food assistance continues to grow, and events like this play a critical role in helping
local organizations keep shelves stocked. Every donation, no matter the size, helps support
neighbors facing difficult times.
