National Guard reflect on service in DC

NORMAN, Okla. (KOCO) — Members of the Oklahoma National Guard are back home after spending last week in Washington, D.C., for the inauguration of President Joe Biden.

Many said they were happy to be home, with one saying he can’t wait until his son is older so he can share his experience.

“It’s very powerful for me to have kind of the stories and thoughts that I can share and a piece of history where he’s going to be learning about it. It’s a really great feeling,” Capt. Brendon Galvin said.

Galvin and others called the mission one that won’t be forgotten. They were glad to assist Capitol police during the inauguration and were thankful it went off without a hitch.

“It’s a very, you know, unique moment. One you never expect to get to see,” Lt. Col. Michael Scanlon said. “I couldn’t be prouder of our soldiers, and most particularly, our non-commissioned officers who made sure we did it right.”

Many were eager to reunite with family, but they had to clear COVID-19 screening and testing first.

“Happy to have them home,” said Col. Yolanda Murray, Oklahoma National Guard Joint Task Force medical planner.
