By Rep. Dillon Travis
This past week marked a major turning point in session as we reached the deadline to pass House bills off the House floor. It took a lot of time, focus and more than a few late nights, but we got the job done.
All House bills have now been sent to the Senate, with 456 measures continuing forward. With that phase complete, our attention turns to the next step as Senate legislation begins making its way to the House. We anticipate reviewing roughly 285 Senate bills and Senate joint resolutions in the coming weeks, starting in committee before heading to the floor. It is a steady cycle, and we are right back in the thick of it.
This week was also a meaningful milestone for me personally as House Bill 3749 passed off the House floor. This was my first bill to advance to the Senate for further consideration.
HB3749 expands access to legal counsel for certain county officials, including county clerks, court clerks and independent county commissioners. Sheriffs, treasurers and assessors already have this ability, and this measure helps ensure other county offices can get timely legal guidance to do their jobs effectively and make informed decisions. It also allows sheriffs to secure legal representation for deputies involved in critical incidents, while putting clear limits in place on how that support is used. Overall, the goal is to help county offices operate more efficiently and respond quickly when legal issues arise.
Even with a busy deadline week, we had the opportunity to welcome visitors from across the state to the Capitol. Tuesday brought Affordable Housing Day, along with Camber Day and Higher Education Day, giving us a chance to hear directly from advocates, students and leaders about the issues and opportunities in their communities.
On Wednesday, we celebrated Aerospace Day, which highlighted Oklahoma’s growing aerospace industry and the innovation happening right here in our state. With strong partnerships between our military installations, private companies and education system, aerospace continues to be a major economic driver and a field where Oklahoma is well-positioned for future growth.
As always, I welcome your thoughts and feedback. I encourage you to reach out to me with any concerns or questions. I want to know what matters most to you and your family. You can always reach me by email at [email protected].
