By Rep. Dillon Travis
As I enter my second week serving as your state representative, we have just completed another legislative deadline to pass House bills and House joint resolutions out of oversight committees. Bills that cleared this step are now eligible to move forward to the next stage, which is being heard on the House floor. This process helps narrow the focus and ensures serious proposals continue advancing through the legislative process.
We began the Second Regular Session of the 60th Legislature with 1,578 House bills and 50 House joint resolutions filed. As of the March 5 deadline, 269 measures advanced out of oversight, Appropriations and Budget, and Rules committees in the House. About 500 measures remain active, and the House will spend the next three weeks considering many of those bills and resolutions on the House floor.
One bill I am proud to co-author is House Bill 3749. I presented HB3749 in the Rules Committee this week. Current law already allows county sheriffs, assessors and treasurers to employ general counsel. HB3749 would expand that authority to also allow county clerks, county court clerks and county commissioners to employ general counsel either as in-house staff attorneys or through outside counsel. This would give county officials greater flexibility to secure direct legal guidance and respond quickly when legal issues arise. I was glad to see HB3749 pass committee, making it eligible to be heard on the House floor.
Another measure I am a co-author on is House Bill 3617, which relates to agricultural equipment repair. The bill would require manufacturers of agricultural equipment to make certain parts, tools and repair documentation available to farmers and independent repair providers on fair and reasonable terms. The goal is to help ensure equipment owners have the ability to diagnose, maintain and repair their machinery without unnecessary barriers.
Serving as your state representative, I am here to listen, learn and work on behalf of the people of House District 35. I would love to hear from you. Please contact my office at [email protected].
