The United States Postal Service is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Route 66 with a new collection of commemorative stamps.

The special pane of 16 stamps pays tribute to the historic highway known as “The Mother Road.” The collection features images captured by photographer David J. Schwartz and highlights scenes and landmarks along the nearly 2,500-mile route.

The stamps are scheduled to be available in May as part of the centennial celebration of Route 66, which was established in 1926.

The iconic highway stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, California has become a symbol of American travel and roadside culture.

Oklahoma is represented in the collection by Tulsa’s Oil Capital Motel — a landmark that no longer exists in its former glory, but still shines on as part of a neon sign park along the 11th street bridge over the Arkansas River.

Postal officials say the stamps are designed to commemorate the road’s cultural significance and enduring legacy as it approaches its 100th year.
