OKLAHOMA CITY – Senator Kristen Thompson, R-Edmond, on Tuesday secured unanimous Senate passage of Senate Bill 985 to formally establish the Oklahoma Local Food for Schools Program.
The measure passed 47-0 and directs the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry to administer the program, which will facilitate the purchase of locally sourced food by school districts across the state. The legislation also creates the Oklahoma Local Food for Schools Revolving Fund to support the program’s long-term sustainability.
Senate Bill 985 strengthens partnerships between schools and Oklahoma farmers, ranchers, and meat processors, ensuring students have greater access to fresh, locally produced foods in K-12 cafeterias.
“Senate Bill 985 is a win for our students, our schools and our agricultural producers,” Senator Thompson said. “By connecting school districts directly with Oklahoma farmers and processors, we can deliver fresh, high-quality meals to students, help lower costs for districts facing rising food prices and strengthen our state’s agriculture economy. Teaching children healthy eating habits early sets them up for long-term academic success and better overall health.”
Senate Bill 985 now advances to the House for consideration.
