OKLAHOMA CITY –
A group trying to open Oklahoma primaries has met its deadline, delivering the required number of signatures to the Secretary of State.
Vote Yes 836 says the group wants to open primaries across the state, meaning any registered voter could vote in primaries, with the top two candidates moving on to the general election.
Supporters of Vote Yes 836 say they gathered more than 200,000 signatures, and the Secretary of State’s office will now start the verification process.
“After our signatures are counted and verified, if that number is over 173,000, there’s another period for legal challenges,” Vote Yes 836 spokesperson Alex Weintz said. “Eventually we’ll get an election date.”
The group says it hopes the initiative bill will be on the ballot for the 2026 general election in November.
