As winter conditions move into Oklahoma, here are key safety tips to help drivers prepare, reduce risk and stay safe on icy or snowy roads.
Winter has come on us fast, so let’s go over some of the things to remember when the roads get tough.
Winter is approaching fast; here are some things to remember when the roads get tough.
Travel Speeds
You need to reduce your speed in the winter when the weather gets bad. “Normal winter driving conditions” are when the roads are dry, and stopping speeds don’t change much. When the snow and ice fall and stick to the roads or elevated surfaces, that is when we need to be most careful. It takes over a football field to bring your vehicle to a stop on ice at 35 mph.
Traveling in Winter Weather
Traveling in winter weather can be dangerous, so it is wise to follow these tips when traveling, especially long distances through ice or snow.
Make sure your car is filled up, tires are at the proper pressure, people know of your travel plans, and you have safety items with you in case you get stuck. It’s best if you don’t feel safe driving in winter conditions to delay, postpone or cancel your trip. If stranded or in an accident, always stay in your vehicle.
Winter Supply Kit
A winter supply kit will help you if you find yourself in an inconvenient or dire situation.
Stay off your phone and avoid distractions while driving, especially in icy and snowy weather! Safely pull off the road or highway if you need to use your phone or are unsure of the safety of the road conditions.
