OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. (KOKH) — A Stillwater anesthetist was arrested by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics was arrested on Tuesday, accused of stealing drugs and, in some cases, using them while in the operation room.
OBN investigators received information from the Stillwater Medical Center in reference to an employee diverting fentanyl and other drugs from patients who were going into surgery or recovering from surgery.
The employee was identified as Daniel Boring, a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). He has been booked into the Payne County Jail to face charges of larceny, burglary, or theft of a controlled substance; and abuse, neglect, or exploitation by a caretaker.
“What our agents discovered is shocking and demonstrates a blatant disregard for the safety of patients entrusted to his care,” said OBN director Donnie Anderson. “We found multiple instances where Boring was ingesting fentanyl into his body while working inside an operating room at the hospital. After ingesting the fentanyl Boring would then assist with medical procedures on patients. One instance of this involved a minor child and another an 84-year-old adult.”
OBN agents believe there are other instances of diversion and abuse of patient medication beyond the two examples listed.
