TULSA, Okla. –
Our Blood Institute says it is in need of people to come and donate blood. It has about a day’s worth of blood but needs enough to cover two to three days.
OBI says not as many people are donating right now, so their supply is running low.
They especially need people with Type O Blood.
HELPING OTHERS
Many of the people who donated blood on Monday at OBI in Tulsa are regulars.
Mark Rabinovitz has donated platelets more than 100 times.
“Well, I don’t really have much money to donate to charity, so it was like, well, I could donate time, and this saves people’s lives, and it’s always an easy thing,” said Rabinovitz.
He hopes other people will jump in and help, because it’s a great thing to know you’ve helped someone.
“I’m not a big publicity guy, but I’ve done it a lot,” said Rabinovitz. “And it’s helping folks, and it’s a good feeling to know, hey, a couple of hours of your time, then you get a shirt, you get some snacks, and you’re helping save lives.”
IMPORTANCE OF DONATING
OBI says its blood supply is dangerously low—so low that it is having to bring in blood from other parts of the country.
“The hospital needs the blood,” said Elizabeth Glover, the Executive Director of OBI Tulsa. “The only way they can get it is by lifesaving donations. Blood cannot be manufactured, so it’s by people coming in, donating, and making sure that our hospitals have what we need.”
They say with the wintry weather in the forecast, fewer people will be getting out, so they’d love to have people come in now.
“We need people to understand that even in the wintertime, we still need them to be responsive,” said Glover. “We need them to understand that we need their help, keep coming in, make sure that donating blood still is their priority.”
