Providence police release surveillance footage of the suspect.
Providence police told NBC 10’s Dan Jaehnig early Sunday that they have a person of interest in custody in the shooting at Brown University.
On Sunday morning, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed it at a press conference.
As a result, the shelter-in-place guidance for Brown University and the surrounding neighborhoods has been lifted.
Police said Saturday that a shooter killed at least two people and wounded nine others at the Barus & Holley Engineering building on campus.

“We have detained a person of interest involved in yesterday’s shooting,” said Smiley.

Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez said the details around the person of interest would be limited.
He would not say where the person of interest was taken into custody, only that it was on Sunday morning.
Perez would not say how the person was affiliated with Brown University.
He says cooperation from various law enforcement organizations helped in capturing a person of interest.
Police continue to collect evidence, according to Perez.
On Sunday morning, a representative of the FBI thanked the law enforcement who worked around the clock to find the person of interest.
Later in the morning, the Providence Police Department confirmed to NBC 10’s Mario Hilario that the person of interest was taken into custody at the Hampton Inn in Coventry.
No further details were released.
Authorities released a short clip of a person of interest walking as he turns the corner on Waterman Street.

Roads began to open up after police finished combing the scene for evidence.
However, Mayor Smiley said that there will be an enhanced police presence around the city to comfort the community, but not because the area is part of the investigation.
At noon, authorities held another press briefing.
From the start, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said they did not have any additional updates on the ongoing investigation.
Col. Perez echoed that stance, saying he had to respect the work of his detectives in gathering evidence that would lead to a successful prosecution.
Even as other officials or agencies released some bits of information, officials would not comment on those.
Perez and Smiley stayed disciplined on not commenting for the sake of a future prosecution.
“The investigation continues to progress extremely fast,” said Perez. “We are in the process of collecting evidence and seizing items we need seize, and search locations we need to search.”
That gathering would probably be the last from the firestation, as the other updates would most likely be at the Providence Public Safety Complex.
Brown University posted the following notice at 5:42 a.m.:
“Providence police have advised the University that the shelter-in-place order has ended for the entire Brown campus. However, police activity continues in areas that are still considered an active crime scene. Be advised that access to these areas of campus continues to be limited.”

NBC 10’s Abbey Buttacavoli spoke with a Brown student who happened to be walking around early Sunday morning.

The student told him he was in a physics exam when the shooting took place. He had sheltered in place the majority of the night. He was kept at his location after the shooting.
He says he was shocked and wondered how it could happen in his school community.
The student says he wonders if he knew the victims and is waiting for them to be identified.
Organizers of various events happening on Sunday have decided to cancel out of an abundance of caution. The Providence Downtown Jingle Run 5k and The Flea announced this morning that their events would not be held.
“The community of Providence should breathe a small breath of relief,” said Mayor Smiley on Sunday morning.
