A 22-year-old man was identified on Sunday as the shooter involved in a Saturday shooting that left four Kansas law enforcement officers injured. The suspect’s grandfather was also hurt in the incident, according to authorities.

The shooting suspect, Stephen M. McMillan, allegedly shot at officers who responded to a “domestic disturbance” call at his family home at Osage County, Kansas, at around 10:30 am on Saturday.

Three Osage County Sheriff’s Department deputies and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot during the confrontation, according to authorities.

Two of the wounded deputies had undergone surgery overnight at the Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center. They are in good condition, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigations in a statement on Sunday.

The third deputy was discharged from the hospital, according to the KBI.

The injured highway patrol trooper was treated for a gunshot wound at the Stormong-Vail Regional Health Center. The trooper was then transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

The trooper has since been released, according to officials.

McMillan’s 77-year-old grandfather, whose identity remains unreleased, is still hospitalized as of Saturday evening with a gunshot injury. The grandfather is expected to survive, according to the KBI.

Col. Erik Smith, superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, during a news conference held on Saturday, said the shooting occurred after a call at the family home seeking help for a domestic disturbance.

Officers allegedly encountered an armed McMillan standing outside the residence, according to authorities.

“After being on scene for less than 10 minutes, gunfire erupted,” Smith stated.

Five officers, including a trooper who was not injured, opened fire on the suspect outside the house. The shooter was killed, according to KBI Director Tony Mattivi.
