OKLAHOMA CITY – Attorney General Gentner Drummond is demanding accountability from Meta after shocking new allegations claim the social media giant allowed Hamas terrorists to upload and circulate horrific footage of murders and abductions during the October 7, 2023, terror attack on Israel.
In a letter sent this week to Meta, Drummond and a coalition of 11 other state attorneys general expressed outrage over reports that Meta’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram, were used to broadcast atrocities in real time. According to the victims’ lawsuit, one woman made the horrifying discovery that video of her grandmother’s murder had been uploaded by Hamas terrorists to her own Facebook page.
“It is shocking to learn that Meta may have stood by on that terrible day of violence to allow Hamas terrorists to further inflict pain and suffering on Israel and their allies,” Drummond said. “This cannot happen again, and our coalition will fight to ensure that terrorists are no longer able to utilize Meta as a vehicle for terrorist propaganda.”
The attorneys general noted that Meta regularly touts its “Transparency Center” and claims to remove violent and extremist content, but these allegations suggest those safeguards failed catastrophically. The coalition is demanding that Meta explain its current policies on violent and terrorist content, describe any remedial actions taken since the October 2023 massacre, and detail what new measures have been implemented to prevent terrorist groups from using Meta’s platforms to promote violence and spread fear now and in the future.
The attorneys general have given Meta until Nov. 10 to respond to their inquiries.
Also signing the letter were the attorneys general of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Texas.
