Tilly Norwood, Hollywood’s first-ever artificial intelligence actor, is sparking anger in the film industry.

Norwood was launched by Dutch producer Eline Van der Velden and was produced by a company called Xicoia, which is known for AI.

Filmmakers and actors have been objecting to the creation of an AI actor and the Screen Actors Guild came out with a strong statement condemning it.

“To be clear, ‘Tilly Norwood’ is not an actor, it’s a character generated by a computer program that was trained on the work of countless professional performers — without permission or compensation,” the guild said in a statement.

“It has no life experience to draw from, no emotion and, from what we’ve seen, audiences aren’t interested in watching computer-generated content untethered from the human experience,” the statement continued.

Amid backlash from the guild and other actors, including Melissa Barrera and Natasha Lyonne, Van der Velden put out a statement on Instagram in response.

To those who have expressed anger over the creation of my AI character, Tilly Norwood, she is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work — a piece of art,” she said. “Like many forms of art before her, she sparks conversation, and that in itself shows the power of creativity.”

Van der Veldon added that working on Norwood has been an act of “craftsmanship” and bringing a character to life.

Norwood has an Instagram account where Van der Velden’s statement was also posted. The social media account has over 40,000 followers at this time.
