STILLWATER, Okla. –
The beloved “jumpin’ little juke joint” first opened in July 1975, the product of a spontaneous idea between co-founders Stan Clark and Steve File shortly after graduating from Oklahoma State University.
“We walked in the building and within 15 minutes we shook hands with the owner,” Clark said. “Had he not been there that Sunday afternoon, I don’t know if we’d ever gone back.”
Clark attributes Eskimo Joe’s success to passion, enthusiasm and hospitality. “We tried to show people a really good time,” he said. “Our simple training was: treat people like they just walked into your home.”
The anniversary celebration kicks off Friday, which coincides with National French Fry Day. The famous Idaho Potato truck will make a stop, and a weekend carnival will follow. Events will continue through July 21, with nightly activities and outdoor concerts planned for July 19 and 20.
“We’re trying to recreate the big old street party,” Clark said. “Last time we did this, police estimated 67,000 people participated over three nights.”
A commemorative T-shirt design honors the restaurant’s five-decade legacy, featuring original artwork and nods to longtime mascots Buffy and Joe.
