Local mom enters contest for new handicap accessible van

A local mother is entered in an international competition to win a handicap accessible van.

Chantae Delaney’s daughter, Kaylee was diagnosed at birth with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which causes her to be immobile.

Chantae’s mom, Judy Talley nominated Chantae and said the van Chantae has been using is not cutting it anymore.

“The van she’s had for many, many years and the wheelchair ramp that allows her to put Kaylee in broke a few years back, so she’s been manually picking Kaylee up and putting her in the van,” Talley said.

Talley said this makes small task, like paying bills a logistical nightmare.

Kaylee even misses school some days because Chantae can’t lift her and the chair.

Talley was looking for solutions to fix their existing van when she stumbled upon this contest.

She entered Chantae by sharing her story on www.mobilityawarenessmonth.com

Talley said you can help by visiting the website and voting for Kaylee everyday.

“You have two opportunities for votes," Talley said. "One is a mobility question, like can you make a van wheelchair accessible? true or false, that is the extra vote. Then you go down a little further on the right hand side column and you have the actual daily vote. You list if you are caregiver, family member, community member and vote that way.”

On May 9 the top 10 percent of contestants will be pulled.

Judges will evaluate things like, if the story is positive and if the caregiver is an inspiration, then announce a winner in June.

The winner will receive a new van between June and August.
