Ponca City police enforce car seat safety

Ponca City Now - January 24, 2014 9:44 am

The Ponca City Police are working alongside the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office to stress the importance of proper use of car seats.

According to state law, a child younger than five must be restrained in a child car seat or a booster seat appropriate for their height and weight.

Children six to 12 must be properly restrained in a child car seat, booster seat or seat belt.

Properly restrained means the restraint system is correctly installed and used in accordance with the seat manufacturers instructions.

However the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are more specific.

From birth to 12 months a child should always ride in a rear facing seat.

Toddlers between one and three years should remain rear facing as long as possible, then moved to forward facing with harness.

Four to seven year old children should remain in forward facing seat with harness, in the back seat.

Eight to 12 year old children should remain in a booster seat until they are big enough to fit in a seat belt properly, in the back seat.
