Ponca City Now - December 24, 2013 9:58 am

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – State parks across Oklahoma plan to host free, guided hikes on New Year’s Day.

Oklahoma State Parks director Kris Marek says this will be the third year that the hikes have been held on Jan. 1. Park staff and volunteers lead the hikes, which range from less than a mile to more than 3 miles.

Hikers should wear weather appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes and bring water and snacks. Hikers can also bring a camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.

Parks taking part include Lake Eufaula State Park, Lake Murray State Park, Foss State Park, Osage Hills State Park and Keystone State Park.

If there is inclement weather, prospective hikers can call 405-230-8385 for cancellation information.
