Applications for the Citizens Police Academy are now available.

The academy begins Jan.23 and runs through April 10.

It’s free for citizens to attend this class, which meets each Thursday evening from 6:30 to 9:30.

This educational opportunity, open to citizens 18 or older with strong ties to Ponca City, is taught by Ponca City Police Officers.

They share the challenges and rewards of their chosen career.

Each class builds on the information from previous sessions, so participants are expected to attend each class.

Topics that will be covered are: 911 emergency communications, the department’s organization hiring and training, police patrol functions, traffic enforcement, functions of the special crimes unit, community policing, DUI and alcohol related offenses, domestic violence, police pursuits, defensive tactics, juvenile crimes, support services and detective functions.

The classes are a blend of lecture, hands on activities, tours, practical applications and demonstrations.

Class size is limited to 20.

The applications are available Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm at the Records Division of the Police Department.

Applications are also available at poncacityok.gov/departments/police.

On the left side of the screen there is a listing, open Citizen’s Police Academy and click to open the application, fill it out and then drop it by the department or mail to PCPD, 200 East Oklahoma, 74601.
