May 24, 1920 – February 7, 2017

Helen Mae Belcher longtime Ponca City resident passed away Tuesday morning in Ponca City with her daughter by her side. She was 96 years of age. Helen was born May 24, 1920 the fifth child of nine children of William Shaw and Rose Shirley Shaw in Pawnee, OK at home weighting 3 pounds. Her mother carried her on a pillow.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the Grace Memorial Chapel with Pastor Don Stanton officiating. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at a later date.

Helen met the love of her life at a country dance and he was playing the fiddle. She went home and told her mother she met the one if I never get him. It was loves at first sight for them.They were married November 30, 1935 in Pawnee, OK at the town square. The chivalry her new husband pushed her down the main street in a wheelbarrow. They made their first home in Webb City, OK later moving to AZ and back to Ponca City in 1948 in the present home69 years. The marriage was blessed with one daughter Frances Belcher Waddell.

She loved to bake/ cook, crochet, sew quilts, love watching her birds, always had a garden later years at least a tomatoes. She was dedicated homemaker to her husband and daughter. Granny Mae her families called her always loved family get together. Helen always had a passion for music and to dance especially a waltz. She was a longtime member of the Country Music Makers. She attended many dances in the area, even in her late years. Dancing had a big impact on her life of her family. As a child she would dance to the music on a battery powered radio her brother in law fixed up.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Disciples class. In her later years with her health she was unable to go to church. She also had a love for Faith Tabernacle Officiating Church.

She is survived by her daughter; Frances Belcher Waddell of Ponca City, OK; 1 granddaughter; Becky Gammill and husband Don of Edmond, OK; granddaughter in law; Sondra Maxwell of Ponca City, OK, 1 great granddaughter: Stacy Boyette of Wellston, 3 great grandsons; Bryan Gammill and wife Kristy of Edmond, OK James (Bo) Womack and wife Tara of Luther, TX and John Maxwell of Ponca City, OK; 2 great granddaughters: Sydney Gammill of Edmond, OK and Rhiannon Boyette of Wellston, 2 great grandsons; Wilbur Womack of Luther, Liam Gammill of Edmond, OK Extended family are Mitchell, Johnny and Waylon Starkey of Luther. Several nieces; Veda Grose, Sharon White, Debbie Payne and Misty Brownfield all of Ponca City, OK and Sue Boyce of Skiatook, OK as well as several other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1990, 1 grandson; Wilbur Maxwell, 1 granddaughter; Kathy Womack. 5 sisters; Fern Day, Annie McCullah, Velma Davis, Bessie McCelland and Shirley Carillo, 3 brothers: Lyle Shaw, Frederick Shaw and Bert Shaw.
